Here's a fresh article that looks like good news on the effect of takeout on handle, but how would one counter the racetrack's argument that lower takeouts didn't generate enough extra handle to earn them any more money? (the flat green line at the bottom). Where's their incentive to lower the takeout if they're going to make the same money regardless?

The author did a follow up article today using Tampa Bay Downs as a (better) example. We spotlighted it on the HANA Blog:
http://blog.horseplayersassociation.org/2011/11/tampa-takeout-rates-and-handle.html

For those of you who might not know, Tampa Bay Downs has quietly been lowering takeout with the start of each new meet over the past 10 years. (This year they dropped WPS a half point. Last year they dropped pick3, pick4 and pick6 a full point.)

The strategy has paid off for them. Since 2001 they have managed to double their average daily handle - while the rest of the industry has tanked during that same time period.
